There are many Shakeology reviews on the web but we bring you the best. Revealing the good, the bad and even the ugly side of the popular shake by the Beachbody team.
Today we’re looking at a product called Shakeology.
It’s hard to turn down an irresistible offer sometimes. Let’s be honest, as humans we’re drawn into advertisements that show us what we really want. As much as you might hate to admit it, those images of beautiful, ripped people, smiling while clutching their shaker bottle can get you to click through to a product page before faster than you can say “how many carbs does this have in it?”
Though it’s easy to fall into a supplement, protein drink, or meal replacement shake trap set by good advertising, there’s a reason we all bounce around from product to product: because not everything is always as promised.
Guarantees such as “lose weight fast” or “great for your immune system” fall to the side when we realize we made a mistake and the product we purchased doesn’t hold up to company’s end of the bargain.
Lucky for you those advertisements don’t have to be a daydream! We’re here help you sift through all the false assurances, so you can find your way to a happy, healthy, and fit life.
Shakeology is a drink mix of the meal replacement variety, which means its marketing is heavily dependent on them selling you those weight loss promises we just talked about.
It’s a product developed by Beachbody, which is famous for selling the P90X and Insanity workouts. Shakeology is their MLM (multi-level management) offering. If you’re not familiar with MLM businesses like Mary Kay and Herbalife, individuals are incentivized to sell products on their own time, becoming brand ambassadors, or “health coaches.”
The programs are often called scams or pyramid schemes, and to those unfamiliar with the selling process, it can definitely look like that. For more on MLM businesses read here.
It is important that we point his out in our review is because MLM companies are set up to do one thing: make money. The “coaches” and “reps” they train to sell you their products don’t go to Beachbody headquarters to learn about the health benefits of the Shakeology ingredients, they go there to learn how to sell more.
And while there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make money, it can often cloud the view of those pushing products to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Of course if a product is good, then just like there’s nothing wrong with making a profit, there’s nothing wrong with selling something that’s going to legitimately benefit you.
But does Shakeology do that?
A quick glance at Shakeology’s website shows the typical imagery we mentioned earlier; beautiful, fit people smiling next to words of encouragement and promises of shedding those pounds.
More specifically they promise that Shakeology will help you:
- Lose weight
- Reduce junk food cravings
- Provide healthy energy
- Support your digestion and regularity
Buzzwords like “superfood” and “nutrient dense” are thrown at you with colorful pictures of shakes that are dripping with beads of moisture.
What you DON’T find very easily on their website is a list of ingredients, or the nutrition facts. You have to dig deep into their FAQs to finally find them. Here’s the lowdown straight from their chocolate flavored blend:
- Whey Protein
- Pea Protein
- Flax Seed
- Pea fiber
- Acerola Cherry
- Chicory Root Fiber
- Goji Berry
- Rose Hips
- Enzyme Blend (Amylase, Cellulase, Lactase, Glucoamylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Invertase)
- Luo Han Guo
- Himalayan Salt
- Lactobacillus Sporogenes
- Green Tea
- Sacha Inchi
- Non-GMO Fructose
- Natural Chocolate Flavor
- Xanthan Gum
Wow, what a list. While we could go into each ingredient and their benefit, we’ll spare you, and let the relevant nutrition facts speak for themselves:
- 160 calories
- 2g total fat
- 17g carbs
- 6g fiber
- 6g sugar
- 17g protein
So what can we take away from this? Well, all of the ingredients that are added to the mix are meant to supplement nutrition. This isn’t a bodybuilding type product, again, it’s touted as a meal replacement. By adding all the crazy herbs and fruits you’ve never heard of, Shakeology is trying to convince you that their drink mix has enough nutrients packed in it so you’ll go without food, thus fulfilling the meal replacement prophecy.
One thing that caught our eye right away was the amount of calories. One hundred and sixty calories might not be a great number as a substitute for a meal, no matter how much goji berry extract your enzyme blend has. With the low amount of protein, and high carb count the shake mix is looking like it may not provide the appetite suppression it first promised.
Again, this is dependent on your own fitness goals and if these nutrition highlights fit into your diet, then so be it. But Shakeology on it’s own will NOT help you lose weight unless you’re on a low-calorie diet that also involves eating actual food.
We’re also not hearing such good things about the taste either…
As you can see from the ingredients, Shakeology has a variety of different fibers, which translates into it being rather thick in consistency. And not the good thick either, a very chalky, and sometimes “coarse” consistency according to reviews on Amazon.
If you’re gonna go with it, get the chocolate, and never the “Greenberry” unless you’re a masochist and you’re into that sort of thing. It doesn’t look like they even sell it anymore, but if you’d like to give it a shot, go ahead and let us know how it goes!
We also have a huge surprise for you. If you haven’t already, get a load of the price:
$129 USD for a 2lb., 30 serving bag.
You’re definitely free to make your own decisions here, but no matter how much Chicory Root and Camu-Camu you put in a bag, we’re not entirely sure it’s worth that much.
- Nutrient dense
- Company ethics
- High in carbs
- Low in protein
Are you not too keen on buying Shakeology? There are some ingredients that you’re not really fond of? Doesn’t matter, we have collected a couple of alternative products to Shakeology. Sit down, weigh in your pros and cons and pick something else from this list. Bear in mind that nutrition is very important and that you should pick one that suits you best.
1. LABRADA Lean Body
Designed by Lee Labrada, former bodybuilding champion and a member of IFBB Hall of Fame, Lean Body comes with 35 grams of trademarked Lean Pro protein. Lean Pro represent a mixture of various proteins with different levels of digestibility. While some are digested instantly, others take the time to dissolve in your stomach thus creating a state in which your body gradually gets all the proteins it needs. For what it’s worth Lean Body allegedly has the best taste of all the protein shakes available on the market. Apart from proteins, Lean Body also contains vitamins fatty acids and glutamine with only six grams of sugar making it #1 substitute for Shakeology.
2. ViSalus Vi-Shape
Vi-Shape comes in many flavors but the one that they’re most proud of is Vanilla Cream, so you can simultaneously have a healthy nutritional shake and enjoy that scrumptious rich taste of a vanilla cream cake. If you’re not satisfied there are over 1000 Vi-Shape community recipes shared by its many users. However, great taste of this product is only at the surface of this product: the ingredient that makes it work is a patented blend of proteins called Tri-Sorb. Apart from the rich mixture of proteins, there is not much else as the product is very light on carbs, calories, fat, and sodium.
3. Orgain Organic Protein
The word “protein” is most commonly associated with meat and animal products. However, there are many athletes and bodybuilders out there that have accepted the vegan lifestyle. If you are a vegan yourself there are products that fit in your diet regimes and still give you all the necessary protein. One of them is Orgain’s Organic Protein that boasts 21 grams of organic plant protein from chia, brown rice, and peas. Apart from the abundance of natural proteins, it does contain a little bit of fat but, luckily, it has no sugar. All of the ingredients are completely organic and it is aimed not only at athletes but also to businessmen and students.
4. IdealShape’s IdealShake
If you have a problem with the price of Shakeology, we understand you. The most important thing with buying a protein shake are its effectiveness and safety. However, that doesn’t mean filing for bankruptcy. That’s where IdealShape’s IdealShake comes into play. Apart from its catchy name, IdealShake is one of the products with the lowest price. First and foremost it blocks your hunger up to 4 hours. Being made of whey proteins, it has only 110, 2 grams of sugar and 22 various vitamins and minerals. IdealShake can substitute 2 meals a day making it ideal for weight-loss.
Best places to buy Shakeology
So, you weighed in pros and cons, took some time to think (mind you, that’s very important when buying a protein shake!) and decided that Shakeology is the ideal choice for your needs. Congratulations on your resolution. Your next thought is: ” I have no idea where to buy it!” That’s all right: we’ve got you covered.
Unfortunately, Shakeology isn’t yet available in stores, so there is no physical place where you can bang your money on the counter and return home to your exercise. The only way is to order it online. While you may already be thinking about purchasing it from the most popular online retailers such as Amazon and E-Bay, hold your horses. We know that it’s probably the easiest way, but definitely not the cheapest one. There are lots of other options for buying yourself a Shakeology product that doesn’t include additional expenses and fees that come from shipping. We all like to spend as little as possible and there is nothing wrong with that. Gathered here are some of the best ways you can get your Shakeology for a minimum price.
1. Directly from their website with a 10% discount
The first option is to go directly to Shakeology.com and pick the product of your desire. You can create an account, enter your details and order directly from them. They offer a monthly delivery through Autoship program. What it means is that starting in 30 days you would receive a monthly package of the product. Their website also offers a wide variety of packages depending on how much you need: from a single package of Shakeology a month to 12 packs in a box. There is also a possibility of alternating flavors for those of you who want to try all varieties. You would receive a different flavored shake every month while paying the same price. The best of all is, by agreeing to the home delivery Autoship terms, you get a monthly 10% discount forever. You can cancel your agreement any time if you’re not satisfied with the product.
2. Become a Team Beachbody Coach and get a 25% discount
If you are satisfied with Shakeology and want to start using it, in the long run, you can save 25 % by becoming a Team Beachbody Coach. This basically means that you have to pay an entrance fee, which they charge you only once and you get a 25 % percent discount on every shipment. It isn’t much in the first couple of months, but in a year you will notice a difference on your wallet.
3. Get free Shakeology
The last option is not spending money at all. Everybody likes that, right? However, to achieve this you have to first become a Beachbody Coach and start endorsing the product and selling it to other people for a slightly higher price. This means that if you sell as much as you order for yourself you’ll receive a symbolical bonus for your effort.
While nothing in Shakeology is inherently bad for you (see the LabDoor.com report here), it seems a bit basic for the price you pay. We began this review by explaining the profit motive behind Shakeology’s parent company, Beachbody. The price clearly reflects the points raised.
You’re welcome to try Shakeology out for yourself, though, and hey, if you like it then who are we to judge? Like we said there’s nothing especially bad about the blend. It’s a meal replacement shake meant for people on a low-calorie diet looking to supplement their lifestyles, and if you see results from Shakeology, then that’s great! We’re all about you, and helping you to achieve your fitness goals.
Just know that there are many other products out there at a fraction of the cost, so be sure to do your research and find the one that works best for you!
